＜プロジェクトの背景＞
ウクライナがロシアの侵攻によって激しい戦争状態に陥っていることが連日報道されています。ひとりでも多くの市民が無事でいることを祈るばかりですが、ウクライナの映画人たちはどうしているだろうかと、心配でなりません。
すぐに頭に浮かぶのが、ヴァレンチン・ヴァシャノヴィチ監督です。2019年の監督作『アトランティス』がヴェネチア映画祭の注目を浴び、同年の東京国際映画祭のコンペティション部門にも招聘され、審査員特別賞を受賞。来日も果たし、知己を得ることができました。
『アトランティス』は、ロシアとの紛争をディストピア世界の物語として描いたリアルな寓話作品でした。まさに戦争は今年始まったものでなく、2014年のクリミア併合以来ウクライナは常に戦争状態であったことを気付かせてくれる重要作です。
そして2021年に発表された『リフレクション』も、ロシアとの紛争の酷さを、高度に洗練された美学に貫かれた映像で描く驚異の作です。
この2本は、今こそ見られるべき作品であるはずです。
ヴァシャノヴィチ監督が世界で注目される理由は、作品で描かれる内容が極めて今日的に重要な主題であるということだけでなく、研ぎ澄まされた美学が観る者の目を見開かせ、撮影スケールに驚愕させられる点にもあります。計算し尽くされ、そして度肝を抜かれるワンシーン・ワンカットは映画の醍醐味を存分に備えており、ヴァシャノヴィチ監督の映画作家としての才能は映画愛好者を熱狂させる美的センスを備えています。
『アトランティス』は2019年の東京国際映画祭で上映された後は劇場公開されることがなく、そして21年の最新作『リフレクション』はヴェネチア映画祭のコンペティション部門に選出されたものの、いまだ日本で上映の機会を得ていません。
その場を設けるのは今を置いて他に無いと考えたのが、プロジェクトの背景です。
＜プロジェクトの概要＞
ヴァシャノヴィチ監督の2本を上映することでウクライナの特異な才能に触れてもらい、そしてウクライナ映画人を支援する寄付を集めることが、この企画の主旨です。
まだ日本で限定的な形の紹介に留まっているヴァシャノヴィチ監督の作品2本を上映します。そして、会場費や、字幕制作費などの実費を、クラウドファンディングでカバーしたいと希望しています。作品のプロデューサーに一定額を還元し、上映実費を上回った額はウクライナの映画人をサポートする団体に寄贈します。ヴァシャノヴィチ監督のみならず、おそらくは機能を止めているであろう、ウクライナの映画と映画人を支援したいと思います。
＜『アトランティス』について＞
舞台は2025年、ロシアとの戦争が終結して1年が経ったという設定です。
ウクライナ東部は荒廃し、地雷原が点在する不毛地帯となっている。元兵士のセルヒーは戦争で多くを失い、PTSDに苦しむ。空虚な日々が過ぎる中、土中に埋められた兵士の遺体を掘り出し身元を特定する業務に従事する女性カーチャと出会う…。
「2025年に戦争が終わっているという設定とした自分は楽観的かもしれない」と監督は2019年当時に発言していましたが、いま振り返ると胸がえぐられる思いがします。
戦後の荒廃した光景と、深く傷ついた元兵士の心境が描かれ、ロシアとの紛争が与えたダメージがリアルなものとして現れます。設定こそ近未来ですが、描かれる状況はリアルです。現在起きている戦争を確実に予兆する作品として、見る者に事態の深刻さを実感させます。
映画的には、計算し尽くされた見事なワンシーン・ワンカットに目を奪われます。また、セルヒーが働く旧式で巨大な製鉄所や、怪物のようなパワーショベルの存在感が画面を圧し、完璧な構図の中で起こる奇跡的な動きに映画ファンは何度も息を飲むはずです。
深い傷跡の中にかすかなユーモアさえも交え、そして希望のかけらを見出そうとする本作は、現在の状況への切なる祈りであると思わずにいられません。

＜『リフレクション』について＞
ロシアがウクライナに侵攻を始めた2014年を舞台としています。
ウクライナ東部での戦線が激化し、外科医のセルヒーは義務感に追われるように自らも志願して戦地へと赴く。ロシアに制圧された地域に入ってしまい捕虜となったセルヒーは、収容所で人間としての尊厳を失わせる肉体や精神の破壊を目の当たりにする…。
セルヒーが捕まってしまう地域の（自称）ドネツク共和国がどのような地域であるか、現在の報道を追っていたおかげで我々にも理解が容易いでしょう。ロシア人、あるいはロシア語を話す男にセルヒーは酷い拷問を受ける。この紛争が、開始当時から生易しいものではなかったことが、ストレートに画面に描き出されます。
この作品の興味深いところは、紛争の酷さを伝えるばかりでなく、ひとりの男の複雑な心境を描く点にあります。セルヒは身近な者に嘘をつかなければならなくなり、それはエゴなのかどうかという葛藤が描かれます。戦争の傷を描く作品でありつつ、複雑な家族の物語でもあるのです。そして、肉体と魂を巡る作品でもあります。
監督の映像の美学は洗練さを増し、冒頭シーンから惹き込まれるでしょう。そして、何故鳥はガラス窓にぶつかるのか、何故野良犬に襲われるのか…。目に見える事象以外に、様々なメタファーも盛り込まれています。ただ正面から戦争を描くわけでなく、映像で見る者を「愉しませ」ながら、ひとりの人間のミクロな魂に焦点を当てる監督の演出姿勢が冴えます。

＜募集するお金の使い道について＞
募集したお金で、今回の上映にかかる経費を賄います。具体的には、会場費、日本語字幕制作費、上映素材制作費、などです。
また、『アトランティス』と『リフレクション』のプロデューサーに一定額を還元し、さらに募集したお金が上映経費を上回った場合、ウクライナの映画人全体を支援すべく、下記団体に寄贈します：

戦争下で苦しむウクライナの映画人を応援し、励まし、未来の映画製作に希望を繋げられる支援を目的とします。
＜想定されるリスクとチャレンジ＞
この企画は、「ウクライナ映画人支援上映会 有志一同」で進めております。もともと、東京国際映画祭で共に業務を行っていたメンバーが中心です。上映業務についてはプロが集まっているので、実務についてはリスクはないと考えています。
ただし、メンバー全員が世界の映画業界を憂いた上で今回の企画に参加しており、収益を目的とした上映ではなく、本来期待すべき報酬もウクライナ映画のために寄付をするというつもりで参加しております。
なんとしてもクラウドファンディングで上映経費をカバーしたい。そして経費以上の額を集めて、ウクライナ映画人に寄付したい。このことがまさにチャレンジそのものであります。

【矢田部吉彦プロフィール】
仏・パリ生まれ。2001年より映画の配給と宣伝を手がける一方で、ドキュメンタリー映画のプロデュースや、フランス映画祭の業務に関わる。2002年から東京国際映画祭へスタッフ入りし、2004年から上映作品選定の統括を担当。2007年から19年までコンペティション部門、及び日本映画部門の選定責任者を務める。21年4月よりフリーランス。
＜さいごに＞
日頃より映画に関わっている自分たちスタッフとしては、やはりウクライナ映画のことが何より心配です。日本に紹介したいウクライナの監督の作品を上映するとともに、義援金を集めることが、いま自分たちに出来ること、やりたいことであると考えています。

Urgent Project in Support of Ukrainian filmmakers: Screenings of Films Directed by Valentyn Vasyanovych
We will screen "Atlantis" and "Reflection" (both films screened at the Venice Film Festival, but not yet theatrically released in Japan) directed by Valentyn Vasyanovych, who represents modern Ukraine cinema, and collect donations to support Ukrainian filmmakers.
<Project Background>
As you know it has been reported every day that Ukraine is in a state of fierce war due to the invasion of Russia. All we can do is just pray for the safety of as many Ukrainian people as possible, yet we cannot help but be concerned about the situation of Ukrainian filmmakers.
A Ukrainian filmmaker who immediately comes to our minds is Valentyn Vasyanovych. In 2019, his film "Atlantis" attracted the huge attention in the Venice Film Festival, and the film was invited to the Competition section of the Tokyo International Film Festival in the same year; and won the Special Jury Prize. The director Vasyanovych also visited Japan to attend the festival.
"Atlantis" is a realistic parable that portrays the Ukraine’s conflict with Russia as a story of the dystopian world. The film is an important work that reminds us Ukraine has always been in a state of war since the annexation of Crimea in 2014. "Reflection" (2021) is also a marvelous work with highly sophisticated aesthetic image that depicts the severity of the Ukraine’s conflict with Russia. These two are most essential films to be screened now.
The reason why director Valentyn Vasyanovych is attracting huge attention in the world is not only that content depicted in his work is a very important subject today, but also that the sharpened aesthetics open the audience’s eyes wide and the scale of his cinematography amazes them. Vasyanovych’s calculated and stunning one-scene and one-cut build up real thrill in the film, and he as a filmmaker has sense of aesthetic that makes film lovers enthusiastic.
"Atlantis" has not had theatrical release in Japan since the screening at the Tokyo International Film Festival in 2019, and "Reflection" has not yet had a chance to be screened in Japan although the film was selected for the Venice Film Festival's Competition section.
The background of this project is that we think that there is no other opportunity to set up the screenings now.
<Project Overview>
The purpose of this project is to show the unique Ukrainian talent by showing two films directed by Valentyn Vasyanovych, and to collect donations to support Ukrainian filmmakers.
We will screen the two films directed by Vasyanovych, which had limited chance to be introduced in Japan and we would like to cover the actual screening cost such as the costs of screening venue and subtitle production, with crowdfunding. The amount exceeding the actual screening cost will be donated to the Ukrainian film institution. We would like to support not only director Valentyn Vasyanovych, but also Ukrainian films and filmmakers who are probably out of function now.

Sergiy, a former soldier suffering from PTSD, is having trouble adapting to his new reality: a life in pieces, a land in ruins. When the smelter he works at finally shuts down, he finds an unexpected way to cope joining the volunteer Black Tulip mission dedicated to exhuming war corpses. By working alongside Katya, he understands that a better future is possible. Will he learn to live without war and accept himself as he is?

Ukrainian surgeon Serhiy is captured by the Russian military forces in the conflict zone in Eastern Ukraine and while in captivity, he is exposed to horrifying scenes of humiliation, violence and indifference towards human life. After his release, he returns to his comfortable middle-class apartment and tries to find a purpose in life by rebuilding his relationship with his daughter and ex-wife. He learns how to be a human being again, how to be a father and help his daughter, who needs his love and support.

<Valentyn Vasyanovych>
Valentyn Vasyanovych is a director, producer and DOP. He was born in 1971 in Zhytomyr, Ukraine. He graduated from the Karpenko-Kary National University of Theatre, Film and TV as a cinematographer in 1995 and a documentary filmmaker in 2000. In 2007, he finished his studies at the Wajda School in Poland. In 2012, he made his debut feature film Business As Usual (Odesa International Film Festival, Special Jury Mention, FICC award). In 2014, Valentyn Vasyanovych produced and photographed "The Tribe" by Myroslav Slaboshpytskyi. In 2019, the feature anti-utopia film "Atlantis" won the Best Film Award in Orizzonti at the 76th Venice International Film Festival, and a large number of prizes and awards around the world. In 2021, his newest feature "Reflection" has been selected for Competition at 78. Venice International Film Festival.

Investors who wish to attend screening will be asked to specify the above screening date and time before participating in this crowdfunding.
*If the number of investors for each screening does not reach the full number of seat, you can buy a ticket on the day at the venue to drop in the screening. The fee of a ticket on the day will be 3,000 yen.
In addition, for those who cannot attend the screening but want to donate to the Ukrainian film industry, we have pledge system which allows investor’s participation only by donation.
<How the fundraised money is used>
The fundraised money will cover the cost of this screening, specifically expenses of the screening venue, Japanese subtitle production, screening material and others.
If the fundraised money exceeds the screening costs, the amount will be donated to the Ukrainian film institution. The aim is to support and encourage Ukrainian filmmakers suffering from the war and to help them connect their hopes to future filmmaking.

<Assumed risks and challenges>
This project is being promoted by "Ukrainian Filmmaker Support Screening All Volunteers" and the main members are the staff who worked together at the Tokyo International Film Festival. Our team consists a lot of highly skilled experts in film screening, so we don't think there is any risk in this project. However, all the members participated in this project not for the purpose of profit, but with the intention of donating the rewards that should be expected for Ukrainian cinema, as we are all worried about the world’s film industry now.
We want to cover the screening costs with crowdfunding, whatever it takes. We want to collect amount of money more than the expenses and want to donate to Ukrainian filmmakers.
