孤高の割り箸ピアニストSami Eluが誰も聴いたことの無い新しい楽器を作ります！
下町・深川の作業場のあるカフェで制作し、期間中は皆さんとワークショップやライブなどを行いながら楽しく作ろうと思います！！

サミエル
自作の木製弦楽器「割り箸ピアノ」を操る、孤高の割り箸ピアニスト・Sami Elu。 アメリカのBerklee音楽大学で作曲を専攻、卒業後2006年に来日。 2012年頃から、「ピアノをより様々な奏法で演奏したい」といった思いを持ち、「割り箸ピアノ」を製作した。自主制作盤「光」「幻」は累計1万枚以上売り上げた。 2015年Niceness musicから「Passage 」をリリース。 2016年夏に公開された演奏動画のYouTubeは700万再生を突破した。またTEDxTokyoでの自作楽器についてのプレゼンテーション、子供達に楽器作りのワークショップを行うなど多方面で活躍している。

このプロジェクトについて
孤高の割り箸ピアニストSami Eluが誰も聴いたことの無い新しい楽器を作ります！
下町・深川の作業場のあるカフェで制作し、期間中は皆さんとワークショップやライブなどを行いながら楽しく作ろうと思います！！
はじめまして、サミエルです！
「Sami Elu 」(サミエル)は、ボストンの郊外に1981年に生まれました。
母の影響で幼少期からピアノを習いバークリー音楽院を卒業後、スコットランドやニューヨークでの生活を経て日本に来ました。
2012年ごろから日本の伝統音楽の琴や三味線やインドの古典楽器などから影響を受けて、廃材や安い木などを利用してオリジナルの楽器を作りはじめました。
そして、出来た楽器は鍵盤に割り箸を使用した「割り箸ピアノ」と名付けストリートでライブ活動をするようになりました。
現在では、ほぼ毎日どこかで演奏して、Youtubeなどを通じて世界中からも楽しんでもらえるようになりました。
でも、「割り箸ピアノ」には色んな問題がありました。
安い木材をしているので
どうしても、変形してしまう。
（キーが変わってしまい、ライブ中に何度も調律をしなくてはならない）
どうしても、重い。
(この夏に腰を痛めてしまい、演奏が出来ない日もありました。）
楽曲の幅が狭い。
（実はフラット、シャープなどの音階が出せないので限られた曲になってしまう）
これらを解決して、さらに誰も 聴いたことの無い新しい音楽を奏でる楽器を作る決意をしました！！
今までの楽器とココが違う！！
- 軽量化する。
- 丈夫な材料に変える。
- 響板を付けて生音を良くする。
- 鍵盤の仕組みを変えて、下から叩く式にする。
- 一弦一弦にギターのカポーと似てる感じのスイッチを付けて音階が変えられるようになる。
サミエルが今回の計画を発表します！
制作スケジュール
第一段階：フレーム、響板、ブリッジ、弦（一ヶ月目）
・ cncルーターでフレームをくり抜く
・ 調律ピンの穴を掘る
・ エンドピンの穴を掘る
・ 響板を切る
・ 仮のブリッジを作る
・ fusion 360のソフトでブリッジの設計図を描く
・ cncルータでブリッジを彫る
・ フレーム、響板、ブリッジをラッカーで塗る
・ 一番低い位置オクターブのベース弦を巻いてもらう
・ 弦を張る
第二段階：鍵盤（二ヶ月目）
・見本の鍵を作る
・鍵盤全体を図って描く
・鍵盤を乗せるためのフレームを作る
・鍵を切る
・鍵を削ってラッカー塗ってガイドピンのところで穴をあける
・支点の棒を作って設置する
・ガイドピンを設置する
・皮と木でハンマーの部品を作る
・ハンマーを鍵に設置する
・雑音を抑えるためにフェルトを張る
第三段階：付属品、最後の仕上げ（ファンディング期間が終わるまで）
・ピクアップを設置する
・ピエゾマイクを注文して設置する
・スピーカーをカスタムで作ってもらう
・エンドピンと鍵盤の守り棒を作る
・楽器のケースを作る
・スイッチの位置を一弦づつ図って描く
・スイッチの位置で穴あける
・スイッチを設置する
・スイッチの守りを作る
・台を作る
・ピックを作る
第四段階：レコーディング、CD制作（二月中旬完成予定）
・一週間かけて練習して楽譜書く
・一週間かけてじっくりレコーディング作る
・マスタリングが出来上がるまでにCDのパッケージをデザインする
・CD生産（会社に頼む）
クラフトマンとしてのチャレンジ
今回、理想の楽器を創るために初めて３Dターニングマシンや３Dプリンターなどを駆使して制作して行く予定です。
これは専門的な知識や技術を必要としますが、サミエルはそれら全てを身につける所からスタートしていきます。
その為、３Dターニングマシンや設計ソフトの講習なども受講し、古典ピアノやギターなどの工房の方への専門的なインタビューなども行います。
制作期間は実験的な作業を重ねながら独自の楽器へと作り上げていくので、完成までは２〜３ヶ月は掛かると考え、 2018年1月を完成予定としております。
またご支援いただいた資金は主に、材料費、機材の購入費、専門機材の使用料、CD制作費などに充てさせていただきす。
制作後の活用について
完成された楽器を使い今よりもさらに魅力的な楽曲を制作し、世界中の皆さんにライブパフォーマンスをご提供致します。そして、いつかはこの楽器を量産化し誰もが使える新しい楽器になればと思います。
想定されるリスクとチャレンジ
今回のプロジェクトはサミエル本人が考えた設計プランに基づきある意味実験的に作っているため、今までの楽器の問題が全て解決できるかはわかりません。
また、作業をしていく上で場合により設計プランまたは制作スケジュールを変更する可能性がございます。

深川・門前仲町に今年６月にオープンした作業場を併設したカフェ
『yane』のオーナー谷脇さんです。
こちらの作業場を主な制作拠点として使用させていただく事になりました。
カフェなので制作期間中には様々なイベントを行う予定です。

Hi, I'm Sami Elu.
Born in Boston, 1981.
Studied piano and composition as a young'un. Been making music all along the way.
Moved to Tokyo since 2006, and eventually got into instrument building because it was an exciting way for me to explore sound; I’ve always been fascinated by the myriad instruments of the world.
The first chopstick piano was made in 2012 and has been through 5 versions.
I’ve been playing on this instrument day and night, week after week, year after year until my fingers bleed and back aches.
It may look like fun (and it is), but it’s a constant challenge and a struggle at the same time.
・For one the keyboard has always been finicky, requiring a fair amount of force to play, some keys sticking or not returning properly, or hitting the string too soft or too hard, or any other number of annoying things.
・The body in all 5 versions has been shoddily built and often with inappropriate materials, so it always goes out of tune, or even bends in the middle or cracks at the point where the strings are anchored.
・The latest version, while the strongest yet, is cumbersome and heavy, weighing 33 pounds in the case.
・I’ve thus far neglected to attach a proper soundboard, relying on electric amplification. Improving the natural acoustics of the instrument and overall tone quality are major priorities in the upcoming version.
・The instrument is always stuck in one key until you tune it with the wrench. This takes a bit of time. I want to have switches or levers, like on the harp (or the qanun, a dulcimer-like instrument) that can be used to easily and quickly change to a new key during performance. Basically, adding sharps and flats on the fly.

Everything is set up for me to build the new instrument, as I aim to improve the sound and rectify these matters.
I have the wood (ideal wood for the body and soundboard), a workshop, the tools, a sketch of the instrument and 3D design of the frame, a keyboard action design and bridge design, access to a lab with a cnc router where the body will be shaped, a place to order custom wound bass strings, an electromagnetic pickup, tuning pegs, a friend who will help design a custom made speaker, another acquaintance who makes customized piezo pickups for folk instruments, and another friend who has offered to design 3D printable switches that can be used to change the key. All this stuff is ready to roll.
Estimated construction timeline
Stage 1: Body, soundboard, bridges, strings
・ carve with inc router
・ tuning pin holes
・ end pin holes
・ cut soundboard
・ stain body + soundboard
・ make temporary test bridges
・ design bridges with fusion 360
・ carve bridges with inc router
・ get custom made wound bass strings
・ install pegs and pins
・ string the instrument
Stage 2: Keyboard
・ make example key
・ draw, measure and design sketch of entire keyboard
・ make a frame to hold the keyboard
・ cut the keys
・ smooth them, stain them, drill guide holes
・ make and install pivot bar
・ install guide pins
・ make the beaters with leather and wood
・ install beaters
・ install felt bands for dampening key noise
Stage 3: Add-ons and final touches
・ install pickup
・ install piezo pickup
・ get custom made speaker system
・ make protectors for the end pins, keys
・ make a carrying case
・ measure out the switch locations for each string
・ drill holes at switch locations
・ install switches
・ make a protector for the switches
・ make a stand
・ make a pick

I humbly present to you the plan for a new kind of string instrument.
It is born out of a playful, curious spirit, at once rebellious towards rigid systems of thought, while also reverent to the discoveries and achievements of our ancestors.
It resembles the pianoforte, dulcimer, harpsichord, koto, zither, harp, and other multi-string instruments, and yet it has its own unique personality and tone-color.
