About this project
We aim to create a documentary by filming blind climber Sho Aita's challenge to the Paraclimbing World Cup (Austria)!

Climbing was selected as an Olympic sport in 2020, and paraclimbing is a sport that remains in the final selection as a Paralympic event in 2023.

盲目のクライマー、會田祥(あいたしょう)選手のパラクライミング世界大会(オーストリア)への挑戦に密着し、ドキュメンタリー映像作品の制作をします。

2021年の東京オリンピックではスポーツクライミングが正式競技として採用され、パラクライミングも2028年パラリンピックロサンゼルス大会での追加競技として継続協議され、注目されています。

私達、CLIMBdoは今年の６月に開催されるパラリンピックワールドカップ・インスブルック大会に出場する會田祥選手に密着しドキュメンタリー映像作品を制作したいと考えています。

インスブルック大会後は、次のヴィラール大会までの間のトレーニングとして、ヨーロッパでのアウトドアクライミングの練習風景にも密着します。

これまで會田祥選手と出会っての1年間で、アウトドアでのチャレンジなど2本の動画を作成してきました。

クライミングを楽しんでいる方からクライミングをやったことがないという方まで楽しめるように、ワクワクする、そして感動するドキュメンタリー映像を制作していきたいと思っていますので、是非応援をお願いします！

This year's Paraclimbing World Cups will be held in Salt Lake (USA), Innsbruck (Austria) ,Villars (Switzerland) and World Championships in Bern (Switzerland). 

After the World Cup in Innsbruck, I will also be closely following Sho’s outdoor training regime on the vast, scenic land until he leaves for the next Villars competition.

會田祥(あいたしょう)選手プロフィール

會田祥（あいた・しょう）( @sho_aita)

• 1996年、山梨県出身。パラクライミング日本代表。
• 生まれつき弱視で17歳で見えなくなる。
• TENAYAとMammut Japanのサポート選手。

10歳のころ視覚障害向けのクライミングスクールでクライミングをはじめる。2011年パラクライミング日本選手権より選手としてのキャリアをスタートさせ、パラクライミング世界選手権では2021年ロシア・モスクワ大会も含め過去5回出場したすべての大会で金メダルに輝いている。

Sho Aita Profile
Born in Yamanashi Prefecture in 1996, he is a paraclimbing representative of Japan.
He was born with amblyopia and became blind at the age of 17.

When he was 10 he started climbing at a climbing lesson for the blind. He started his career as an athlete at the 2011 Paraclimbing National Championships, and has won gold medals in all five Paraclimbing World Championships he has participated in, including the 2021 Moscow Paraclimbing Championships.

He is a support player for TENAYA and Mammut Japan.

2022.7月ヴィラール世界大会

會田選手はパラクライミング世界選手権で過去5回、出場したすべての大会で金メダルに輝きパラクライミング競技の中でも視覚障害の一番障がいの重いB1クラスで世界のトップランナーです。

Sho has won his 5 gold medals despite competing in the most visually impaired paraclimbing competition and can be said to be the World's Top Runner in the B1 Class.

企画者としての想い

企画者の高橋由依です。10年間フォトグラファーとして活動し、クライミングの世界に出会って登ることの喜びと楽しみを感じたのが4年前でした。そこからクライミングの映像に興味を持ち、2021年にはご縁に恵まれクライミングの映像を撮り始め、「CLIMBdo」(@climb.do) をスタートさせました。

世界でも有名なプロクライマー平山ユージさんや安間佐千さんなど、様々なクライマーと関わらせてもらうなかで、日本のクライミングを映像で世界に発信したいと強く思うようになりました。

會田祥さんはそう思わせてくれたクライマーの一人でした。
そしてまだ国内でもあまり知られていないパラクライミングをの映像に収め、もっと広く知ってもらいたいと思うようになりました。

「目が見えない中で、登るのってどんな感覚だろう。。」

という素朴な疑問から始まり、1年間、映像制作者として彼とともに過してきました。
そして私は會田祥さんという一人のフリークライマーを見続け、彼の努力、喜びの瞬間に立ち合い、そしてそれを世界に発信したい。そんな思いの中、今回の映像作品制作を企画しました。

彼のカッコいい・ワクワクするような挑戦を映像に残して、より多くの人と共有したいという気持ちで今回のプロジェクトを発信しました。

thoughts as a planner
I myself felt the joy and fun of encountering the world of climbing, and in 2021, I was lucky enough to start shooting climbing videos and started “CLIMBdo”, our YouTube channel.

While working with various climbers such as Yuji Hirayama and Sachi Amma, who are world-famous professional climbers, I was excited to share Japanese climbing footage with the world.

After meeting one of them, Sho, of course, I want to spread more paraclimbing videos, but more than that, I want to see him challenge himself as a climber and as a human being.First, I started shooting him because I wondered what it was like climbing blind, and then, I saw his endeavor, and delight during one whole year of shooting. I was encouraged to continue with a sense of service and duty.

I wanted to share his challenges with as many people as possible and support him with this project, while simultaneously trying to help the sport grow.

祥選手との出会い

會田祥選手との初めての出会いは海辺のクライミングエリアである城ヶ崎の岩場でした。

インストラクターの田中星司（アストラクライミング主宰）さんの紹介で、會田さんのクライミングしている映像を撮影させてもらいました。

城ヶ崎は、海岸沿いに10数キロに渡って続く断崖で、日のあたる岩場は冬でも暖かく、海を眺めながらのクライミングが楽しめる人気のクライミングスポットのエリアです。

Encounter with Sho
My first encounter with Sho Aita was at an Outdoor class in Jogasaki, in January 2022.Instructor Seiji Tanaka connected us and gave me the chance to video Sho climbing.

Jogasaki is a cliff that stretches for more than 10 kilometers along the coast, and the rocky area is warm even in winter, making it a popular climbing spot where you can enjoy climbing while looking at the ocean.

その日も暖かく、海岸のゴツゴツとした岩を白杖を使いながら普通に降りてくる姿に、本当は目が見えてるんじゃないかと驚いたことを覚えてます。

It was sunny that day, and I remember being surprised when I saw him using a white cane hiking down the rugged rocks on the coast, thinking that he could actually see.

會田さんはとてもシャイで、最初は野望的なものをあまり語りませんでした。しかし、撮影を重ねていくうちにメラメラとした”熱く燃えるなにか”が會田さんの心の中にものがあることに気づきました。

「盲目の」クライマーとしてではなく、一人のクライマーとして登りたい。

パラクライミングに限らず、パラスポーツは障害という枠の中で見られがちです。

「障害があるからできない」、もしくは「できることはここまで」という思い込みは社会の中で存在していると思います。

私もその一人だったと思います。

その枠というものをあまり感じさせず、いちクライマーとしてチャレンジしている會田さんの姿にとても惹かれました。

Sho was very shy at first and didn't talk much about his ambitions. As I filmed more and more, I realized that there was something in his heart.

He came across as a competitor and I felt him saying “I want to climb as an individual, not as a ‘blind’ climber.”

Paraclimbing tends to be seen in the framework of such words as ‘visually impaired’. The belief that you can't do something because you have a disability exists as a barrier in society.

I was very attracted to his spirit of challenging himself without being too conscious of these frames.

自分自身で登りたいという思い

"一人のクライマーとして登りたい" = "自分の力で登りたい!"

この事がどれほど大変ですごい事か気付かされたのは、會田さんのインストラクターである田中さんのある言葉がきっかけでした。

「ブラインドクライマーにとって、オンサイトはありえないんだよ。」

クライミングにおけるオンサイトとはーー

「目標のルートについて何の情報も持たないまま、最初のトライで完登すること。最も価値の高い完登スタイル。」

クライマーにとって、初見でそのルートを登るということは人生で一度しかできない経験であり、そこに価値を見出すクライマーは多い。

しかし、目が見えないクライマーは、サイトガイドから次のホールドの位置の指示を聞く必要がある。つまり、教えてもうということは、先ほどのオンサイトの定義の「何も情報を持たないまま」に反している...、ということは、盲目クライマーは一生オンサイトができないことになってしまうのです。

このジレンマを、田中さんと會田さんは「クラッククライミング」であれば、盲目のクライマーでも自分自身の力のみでオンサイトできると考えました。

クラッククライミングは、「カム」や「ナッツ」と呼ばれる器具を使い自らの手で支点を作りながら岩の割れ目を登っていくというクライミングの一つのスタイルです。つまり「一本の岩の割れ目を登っていく」そして「支点を自分で作る」ということは見えなかったとしても手探りで、自分自身で完結した登りをすることができる。そういう発想だったのだそうです。

とはいえ、簡単なことではありません。それでもガイドに頼らない自己完結したクライミングを行いたい。

それが會田さんの内に秘めた思いでした。

The Blind Onsight dilemma

What made me realize this dilemma was the words of Seiji, the instructor.

"For a blind climber, doing onsight is impossible."

Onsight is defined as “Completing the climb on the first try without any knowledge of the target route”. Naturally this is the highest value completion style.

For climbers, climbing a route on the first attempt is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and many climbers find value in this challenge.

Blind climbers, however, desperately need a site guide to tell them where the bolts are on their route. But to give you this information is against the definition of onsight, which is "without having any prior knowledge". In other words, blind climbers are incompatible to onsight, or so it seems…

Seiji and Sho said to solve this dilemma, the answer is to "climb the crack" and that even blind climbers can onsight in this way by themselves.

In the bolt route, where you climb a bolt driven into a rock with a nunchuk and a rope, you need instructions on how to climb from one bolt to the next.

On the other hand, in crack climbing, where you climb while putting protections in the cracks of a rock, you can always reach the top if you climb along the crack.

This is a simple yet elegant solution to the dilemma.

多くの人が會田さんのチャレンジしていることに心動かされ、勇気づけられたからのなのではないかと思います。

インストラクター田中星司さんの存在

會田祥選手を撮影するにあたり、欠かせないのがインスタトラクターの田中星司さん(@astra.climbing )の存在です。

通常、目が見えないブラインドクライマーの登り方は、サイトガイドと呼ばれるガイドからホールドの方向・距離・形などの情報を教えてもらって登ります。

しかし、田中さんと會田選手の関係は一般のサイトガイドとは違います。

できる限り自身の力だけで登れるように、ごく最小限の指示でナビゲートします。

外岩の講習では登る技術だけでなく、岩の感触や特徴を感じて捉えることで、自分の力で登れるよう感覚を研ぎ澄ませるな講習をします。

従来の指示を出すサイトガイドとしての役割だけでなく、會田祥さんの人柄や、本当にやりたいことを理解し、その目標を叶えようとする田中さんは、今までにない方法にチャレンジしていると思います。誰もやったことがない、新しいことをチャレンジする2人を応援していきたいという思いや、私自身、今後の2人を見てみたいという思いで撮影をしています。

Encounter with Seiji Tanaka
Usually blind climbers need information such as the direction, distance and shape of the hold from a site guide.

Originally, Seiji was doing blind climbing classes at the gym [Rocklands] in Kasai, and shouting ‘10 o'clock’, ‘1 o'clock’ and so on to represent the different directions of the holds.

This was my extraordinary first encounter with Seiji who was guiding a class to climb an indoor wall blindfolded to increase their level of awareness and endurance.

Overtime, as I got to know Seiji better, I saw how he juggled his responsibility towards his students with a stern attitude to push them to become better. During outdoor climbs I’ve witnessed how nervous he becomes watching Sho climb, knowing the innumerable risks that he faces in each moment. Despite this, he is a driving force in supporting and challenging him to continue…

祥くんとの出会いははっきりとは覚えていないのですが、リード競技とパラ競技が同時に行われている世界選手権等の国際大会で何度か競技を拝見し、お話もさせていただきました。会話からは繊細で静かな性格を感じました。しかしクライミングにおいては細く芯のある軸を操り、侍のような鋭い集中力と最後まで諦めない泥臭さを併せ持ち、会場に凄みを放っていました。

　僕が再び彼を観たのは、今回の映像制作クラウドファンディングを立ち上げたCLIMBdoの高橋由衣さん、宮澤響さんが制作&撮影した小川山のジャックと豆の木の映像です。素晴らしい成功に感動すると共に、岩とコンペを自由に飛び回る祥くんの自由さに心を打たれました。

僕は常々、コンペや外岩といったものに本質があるのではなく、それを行う人間の心の中に本質があると思っています。クライミングという生き物のように蠢く世界で、彼は何を観て、極めて行くのか。僕は同じクライマーとして、とても興味深く思っています。

安間佐千プロフィール
12歳からクライミングを始め、2012年、2013年World Cupリード種目2年連続総合優勝を成し遂げる。2015年から競技を引退し、活動の拠点を岩場にシフト。同年に日本人初の5.15b Fight or Flight をスペインオリアナで完登し、マレーシアのキナバル山で標高4000付近にあるTinipi 5.15aの第2登に成功。

その後、新規ルート開拓に専念し、2018年には日本初の5.15bであるSoul Mate を東京都奥多摩で開拓初登。現在は埼玉県二子山や香川県小豆島を中心にまだ誰にも触れられていない岩を求めて歩き回る日々を過ごしている。

I don't remember exactly when I first met Sho, but I saw and talked to him several times at international competitions such as the World Championships, where lead and para events are held simultaneously. From our conversation, I sensed that he had a sensitive and quiet personality. However, when it came to climbing, he wielded a slender and firmshaft, possessing both the sharp concentration of a samurai and the unrefined ambience of not giving up until the very end, giving off a terrifying look to the venue.

I saw him again in the video of Jack and the Beanstalk of Ogawayama produced and shot by Yui Takahashi and Hibiki Miyazawa of CLIMBdo, who launched this video production crowdfunding. I was moved by his wonderful success, and I was touched by Sho's freedom to fly freely around the rocks and the competition.

I always believe that the essence lies not in competitions and outdoor climbing, but in the hearts and minds of the people who perform them. In the world of climbing, which wriggles like a living creature, what will he see and what will he do? As a fellow climber, I find it very interesting.

大場美和プロフィール
9歳からクライミングを始め、ユース年代で日本およびアジアでの輝かしい成績を残し、今後の活躍が期待されるアスリートに成長。3種目あるスポーツクライミングのうち完登コース数を競うボルダリングを得意とし、同種目の日本代表入りを果たす。2015年に起用された大手インターネットサービスプロバイダのCM映像が1週間でネット再生回数100万回を超え話題となり、メディアの注目を浴びることとなった。器械体操で培った柔軟性とバランス感覚、手足のリーチの長さが武器。

現在は自然岩のクライミング活動に軸を置くとともに、スポーツクライミングの普及活動を精力的に行っている。

The path to the goal, our own goals, we are always fumbling and searching under the given conditions.

Impatience, anxiety, conflict, fear when climbing. Liberation from it. The intense emotions a climber experiences throughout a route.

Documenting Sho Aita, who not only excels at World Cups, but also continues to improve technically and mentally, is not only useful in the world of climbing, but also in society. I believe it has a lot of meaning and can break down stereotypes and inspire people going forward.
