中銀カプセルタワーが今こそスゴイ！
普段は見られないカプセルの内側に迫り、20のストーリーを紹介する、出版プロジェクト

黒川紀章氏設計のメタボリズムの代表作「中銀カプセルタワー」。住居や事務所、セカンドハウスなど、これまで表に出ることがなかった様々なタイプの20カプセルの内側を徹底撮影。そこから見えるストーリーを紹介する出版プロジェクト。

Nakagin Capsule Tower Photo Book and DVD Release Project: 20 inside stories of the tower and the lifestyle of its people

Nakagin Capsule tower is well-known as a representative work of Metabolism architecture by Kisho Kurokawa. As the building is a private property, it has not been open to the public. With approval from the management association of the building, we were able to film various capsule units; private residence, offices, and second houses. This project introduces you the unknown stories of each capsule.

■中銀カプセルタワーについて

2本のコア（塔）に140のカプセルが取り付けられ、これを定期的に交換することで、建物の新陳代謝を続ける計画であった「中銀カプセルタワー」。メタボリズム（新陳代謝）のコンセプトが明確で、一度見たら忘れることができない外観は日本人はもちろん、海外からの見学者も魅了します。近年ではハリウッド映画やMVのロケーションとして、またファッションの撮影にも頻繁に使用されます。一般的には外観とコンセプトが注目される建物ですが、10平米という狭小空間に逆に価値を見出し、いかに工夫してそこを使用するかへの人気が高まっています。

Nakagin Capsule Tower consists of 140 replaceable capsule units. Each unit is attached to the core shaft in the center of the tower, and was to be replaced on regular basis so that the building would "metabolize" sustainably.Looking at the exterior of the building, it is easy to see the concept of "Metabolism," and its striking visual image attracts not only people in Japan but also the guests from all over the world.In recent years, some capsule rooms have been used for shooting Hollywood films, music videos, or fashion magazines. Although its visual image and architectural concept had been the center of attention in general, the 10 square memeter minimal space is now attractiong people for creating their personal micro space.

25年程度でカプセルの交換が計画されていましたが、様々な理由により50年近くたった今でも一度も実施されたことはありません。しかし、だからこそ建築家が想定していなかったカプセル内リノベーションが活発化し、竣工当時のオリジナルの内装以外にも和室、アンティーク調に大胆に生まれ変わったカプセルや、Bluetoothスピーカーなどの最新のデジタル機器を備えたものなど様々なものが存在します。カプセルを使用する目的も住居をはじめ、事務所やセカンドハウスなど多岐にわたります。住人も個性的な人が多く、建築家、映画プロデューサーやデザイナーなどアートやクリエイティブに造詣の深い職種が増えてきました。もちろん日本人以外も少なくありません。

The initial plan was to replace all the units every 25 years, which never happened. The tower is getting nearly 50 years old with no major maintenance works so far.This is one of the reasons why there are a variety of unique capsule rooms renovated by non-architecture-professional owners, which the professionals had never ventured. Other than the original interior from the 70's, there are a traditional Japanese style room, a room transformed with antique interior, or a room filled with the latest digital equipments.Capsule rooms are used as an apartment, offices, or second houses. And the owners are from many different countries.Also the profession of residents varies. In recent years, people in art and creative field such as film producer , designer, as well as architects have moved in.

今回の書籍は一般的に知られているメタボリズムのコンセプトや外観にはあえてフォーカスせず、カプセルの内部と人を主役に据えました。

The highlight of this Photo Book and DVD is the inside story of the Capsule Tower and the people living there, not on its exterior design or Metabolism which are already known so well.

メディアでも頻繁に取り上げられてきましたが、この10年間は建て替え問題が常に話題に上がりました。2018年6月には、カプセルタワービルの地主であり約3割の議決権所有者であった中銀グループが、自分たちの権利を投資グループに売却しました。それから2年が経過し、投資グループの議決権はすでに6割を超えています。これが8割以上になると建物解体への動きが加速します。私たちプロジェクトもカプセルの交換施策など様々な提案をしていますが、コロナの影響で白紙に戻ってしまったプランもあり、非常に厳しい立場に追い込まれています。

今後建物がどの方向に進むかはわかりませんが、「カプセルの記録」としても価値のある書籍だと信じて疑いません。もちろん最善策は、コンセプト通りに新しいカプセルに交換されること。その場合において本書が初代カプセルの資料的な位置づけになることを願っています。

For the last 10 years, the building has been facing a threat of demolition, and featured in the media many times.In 2018, Nakagin Group, the original developer and landowner holding 30% of the voting rights of the board, sold their property and rights to an investment joint company.Over the last 2 years, the investment company has aquired over 60% of voting rights, and more than 80% would be required to demolish the building.Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many of the projects we had been working on to exchange capsule units had to call off or to start from scratch. We, the Nakagin Capsule Tower preservation and Restoration Project, are facing a critical situation.

The fate of this building is still uncertain, yet we believe that this photo book and DVD will be, one way or another, valuable as a visual record of this historic building.Needless to say, we are still hoping that all the capsule units will be replaced as it was originally planned.And if that happens as we wish, this would be an archive of the original Capsule Tower Building.

■保存・再生プロジェクトの活動

中銀カプセルタワービルの保存・再生を目的に2014年にオーナーや住人で結成。カプセル見学ツアーや1か月間から宿泊が可能なマンスリーカプセルの運営をおこなうことで、多くのカプセルファンを獲得してきました。建築好き以外の層を取り込むためにカプセルに関連した各種イベント、特にアートや音楽に関連したものを建物内外で開催しました。広報活動にも力を注ぎ、メディアの取材対応をはじめ、ファッションやMV撮影のお手伝いもおこなっています。
