HEIWA Screen

Would you like to help shape UPLINK Hiroshima cinema & cafe with us?
*Conceptual floor plan of UPLINK Hiroshima
UPLINK Hiroshima cinema & cafe is scheduled to open in spring 2027 on the 6th floor of Pacela in Motomachi, Kamiyacho, Naka Ward, Hiroshima City.
With five screens and a total of 255 seats, as well as a café and gallery, we aim to create a place where people and cultures can meet, with cinema at its heart.
In preparation for the opening, we will launch a crowdfunding campaign from October 16 to November 30, 2026, with an initial goal of 30 million yen.
We invite people in Hiroshima, audiences who visit UPLINK Kichijoji and UPLINK Kyoto, our newsletter readers, and film lovers across Japan and beyond to take part in creating this new cinema.
Our program will include films screened at international film festivals, documentaries, Japanese independent films, animation, music films, entertainment titles, and films that children and families can enjoy together.
The cinema will have five screens with 72, 61, 49, 42, and 31 seats, for a total of 255 seats.
We will make use of the different sizes of each screen to create a varied program, including special screenings and talks with directors and cast members.
We also plan to screen Japanese films with English subtitles so that international visitors to Hiroshima can experience Japanese cinema during their stay.
At the café, visitors will be able to talk after a film, read a book, or simply enjoy a cup of coffee.
The gallery will host art exhibitions, while the pop-up area will welcome temporary shops offering handmade goods and other products.
We want UPLINK Hiroshima to be a place people can casually stop by, whether or not they are seeing a film that day.
Hiroshima already has many places that have long supported film culture, including Hatchoza, Salon Cinema, Yokogawa Cinema, and the Hiroshima City Cinematographic and Audio-Visual Library near Hiroshima Station.
There are also people who have organized screenings throughout the city, and audiences who have continued to support them.
As the number of independent distributors and independently produced films grows, and as more classic films return to cinemas through revival screenings, audiences now have more films than ever to choose from.
By adding UPLINK Hiroshima, with its five screens, we hope to create even more opportunities for people in Hiroshima to see those films.
With respect for everything that has already been built here, UPLINK Hiroshima hopes to become part of the city’s film culture.
Beginning with Kamiyacho, we hope to connect with bookstores, record shops, restaurants, vintage clothing stores, lifestyle shops, craft businesses, galleries, and other cultural spaces throughout Hiroshima.
We want to create a network in which local businesses and activities can introduce one another and encourage people to move between the cinema and the city.
The pop-up spaces inside UPLINK Hiroshima are intended for people who run small shops, make things, or are thinking about starting a business of their own.
Someone who comes to see a film may discover a new book, piece of music, object, shop, or person.
Someone who visits a pop-up shop may become interested in a film.
We hope to create more opportunities for people to move naturally between the cinema and the city around it.
We also plan to collaborate with universities, creating opportunities for students to learn about film and moving images, and to organize their own screenings and events.
We will also host lectures and workshops for working adults who want to continue learning.
Film, moving images, culture, society, work.
Regardless of age, we want this to be a place where people can encounter something new and continue learning.
A place where people, culture, business, and learning come together through cinema.
That is the idea behind UPLINK Hiroshima cinema & cafe.
UPLINK Kichijoji UPLINK Kyoto
Since its founding in 1987, UPLINK has been involved in film distribution, production, and exhibition.
Today, we operate cinemas in Kichijoji PARCO in Tokyo and ShinPuhKan in Kyoto.
With the opening of Hiroshima, UPLINK will have three cinema locations.
We have already organized events in which filmmakers overseas join audiences online for conversations after screenings.
With the opening of Hiroshima, we plan to expand these initiatives across all three cinemas.
A stage greeting held in Tokyo can be livestreamed to audiences in Kyoto and Hiroshima.
Filmmakers around the world can connect online with audiences gathered at UPLINK cinemas.
From the cinema where they have just watched a film, audiences will be able to ask directors questions directly and hear about the background of a production and the ideas behind a work.
Our goal is, first and foremost, to create cinemas that audiences enjoy.
At the same time, by opening UPLINK’s third cinema in Japan, we hope to help support a sustainable environment for independent filmmakers and producers, as well as the independent distributors who discover films from around the world and bring them to audiences in Japan.
As a film distributor ourselves, this is something UPLINK feels strongly about.
As preparations for the new cinema progressed, I, Takashi Asai, representative of UPLINK, began traveling to Hiroshima frequently for meetings.
One morning, I left my hotel and walked through the city on my way to inspect Pacela, where the cinema will open.
There were still very few people in the shopping streets.
But as I approached the Atomic Bomb Dome, I saw many visitors from overseas already standing quietly in front of it.
Some were taking photographs, but what stayed with me most were the people who stood there for a long time, simply looking and thinking.
There are people standing in front of the Atomic Bomb Dome early in the morning.
There are people quietly looking at it late at night.
At UPLINK Kichijoji and Kyoto, overseas visitors and people from other countries living in Japan come to see films.
But the international visitors who come to Hiroshima feel different.
On another visit, I went to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum.
There was a long line, and many of the visitors had come from overseas.
There were many families as well.
I still remember seeing children looking seriously at photographs and exhibits showing the immediate aftermath of the atomic bombing.
On August 6, dignitaries from around the world gather in Hiroshima.
But that is not all.
Every day, people come to Hiroshima from all over the world.
They come to see what happened in this city 81 years ago.
Hiroshima holds memories that humanity must never forget.
Atomic bomb survivors and their families live here, carrying those memories forward.
At the same time, people from around the world continue to visit Hiroshima, encounter those memories, and think about peace.
Hiroshima is not a city that speaks to the world about peace only on the days of special ceremonies.
For 365 days a year, it continues to communicate the tragedy of war and the value of peace to people visiting from around the world.
After seeing this again and again, I began to feel that the city of Hiroshima itself serves as a kind of “diplomat,” speaking to the world about peace.
People who visit Hiroshima learn about the history of the city.
Through film, they can also encounter people living in Japan and around the world today.
I believe that opening a cinema in Hiroshima can have this kind of meaning as well.
Film allows us to see events that happened before we were born.
It allows us to learn about things happening in countries we have never visited.
It allows us to experience the time and lives of people whose circumstances may be completely different from our own.
While learning about Hiroshima, I discovered that two cinemas, Sekaikan and Takachiho-kan, once stood in Nakajima Honmachi, in the area that is now Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.
There, too, people once had ordinary days filled with the experience of going to the movies.
Walk from the Peace Memorial Museum and the Atomic Bomb Dome toward Kamiyacho, and UPLINK Hiroshima will be there.
You watch a film there.
You cannot take the film itself home with you.
But you can take home the memory of having seen it.
Perhaps you will tell someone about that memory when you return to your own country.
The memory of a film can travel from person to person, and from country to country.
Bringing films that make us think about peace into everyday life.
We will establish a daily screening slot called HEIWA Screen, dedicated to films that encourage audiences to think about peace.
At first, we considered calling this program “Salaam Screen.”
But the challenges facing the world are not limited to Gaza.
Wars and human rights violations continue in Ukraine, Iran, and elsewhere.
We therefore decided to call it HEIWA Screen.
In English, “heiwa” means “peace.”
But we also hope that the Japanese word heiwa itself might one day become understood around the world, like sushi or karaoke.
That hope is part of the name.
Across our five screens, we expect to hold approximately 30 screenings each day.
Of those, one screening every day will be designated as HEIWA Screen, featuring films that explore war, nuclear weapons, refugees, human rights, and peace.
By continuing this program throughout the year, we hope both to preserve the memory of what happened in Hiroshima and to create opportunities to learn, through film, about what is happening in the world today.
At the same time UPLINK Hiroshima opens, we plan to launch an online sixth screen called Screen 6 HIROSHIMA.
It will stream Japanese films with English subtitles, as well as visual works about peace that we believe should be shared with the world from Hiroshima.
It will also feature Voices from Gaza, a project UPLINK is producing together with a filmmaking team in Gaza to share the voices of people living there, with English subtitles.
Through both theatrical screenings and online distribution, we will send films and moving-image works from Hiroshima to audiences in Japan and around the world.
Turning your support into future participation.
The responsibility for building and operating the cinema belongs to us at UPLINK.
At the same time, we hope that the people who will use this place in the future can also take part in shaping what the cinema becomes.
Through this crowdfunding campaign, we are inviting people in Hiroshima, audiences who visit UPLINK Kichijoji and Kyoto, our newsletter readers, and film lovers throughout Japan to participate.
We are preparing rewards that connect directly to different ways of using and engaging with the cinema, both for people who simply love watching films and for those who run shops, businesses, or creative activities.
Examples include:
These are just some of the rewards we are preparing.
Some rewards will also be available for use at UPLINK Kichijoji and UPLINK Kyoto.
Our initial goal is 30 million yen, and the campaign will run from October 16 to November 30.
Funds raised will be used for construction and equipment costs for UPLINK Hiroshima, as well as for acquiring films related to peace.
Details of each reward, pricing, conditions of use, and the conditions required for the crowdfunding campaign to succeed will be provided on the campaign page.
The memory of a cinema remains not only in the films shown there, but also in each person who spends time there.
We want this to be a place for people who have loved cinemas for years, and also for those who are just beginning to discover film.
We hope to grow UPLINK Hiroshima cinema & cafe into a place that becomes part of everyday life in Hiroshima.
Create new memories in Hiroshima.
We hope you will help us shape UPLINK Hiroshima cinema & cafe together.

A Special Message from Mika Lätti and Director Aki Kaurismäki!
We received a special video message in support of the opening of UPLINK Hiroshima from Mika Lätti, co-owner of the independent cinema Kino Laika in Karkkila, Finland, and film director Aki Kaurismäki.
About the Rewards
A variety of rewards are available through this crowdfunding campaign.
For international supporters, we have translated the HEIWA Message on Screen 6 reward below, as it can be joined from anywhere in the world and does not require a visit to Hiroshima.
We hope people from many different countries and regions will take part by sending a message from wherever they are.

We invite you to submit a short message inspired by one of three themes: Peace, Memory, or Film.
Your message may be addressed to the cinema, to Hiroshima, or to the future.

Screen 6 HIROSHIMA is a new kind of screen designed to connect people in different places through film, beginning here in Hiroshima.

*Messages will appear at random and will not be displayed continuously.
*Messages will be displayed for a period of three years.
*Messages may be translated and/or edited for multilingual display.
*All submitted messages will be subject to a content review before publication.
*The opening of UPLINK Hiroshima may be delayed beyond the currently scheduled reward fulfillment date.
■ Potential Need for Additional Funding Due to Rising Costs
There is a possibility that additional costs may arise before opening due to changes in the prices of materials, equipment, labor, or revisions to construction and equipment specifications.
If this occurs, we will review the plans and specifications and, if necessary, secure additional funding.
■ Possible Changes to the Opening Schedule Due to Construction and Equipment Procurement
The planned spring 2027 opening date may change depending on the progress of construction, the procurement of equipment and machinery, and coordination with relevant parties.
If there are any changes, we will keep our supporters informed.
■ If the Funding Goal Is Not Reached
This crowdfunding campaign will be conducted on an All-or-Nothing basis.
If the target amount is not reached, no funds will be collected and no rewards will be provided.
Even if the target amount is not reached, preparations for the opening of UPLINK Hiroshima will continue.
However, additional fundraising or revisions to the project plan and specifications may become necessary in order to address any resulting funding gap.
Thank you very much for reading this page to the end.
We are working toward creating a place in Hiroshima where watching a film can lead to new encounters and discoveries.
We hope UPLINK Hiroshima will become a place that film lovers want to return to again and again, while also welcoming people who may not yet have had many opportunities to visit a cinema.
We would be delighted if you would help us shape this place together.
Thank you sincerely for your support.
