ダミアン・リナーンは、オーストラリアの作家、イラストレーターであり、刑務所にいる人々に向けた無料の文芸雑誌『Paper Chained』の編集者。
ダミアンは2015年末から10ヶ月間、オーストラリアの刑務所に収監された経験をもつ。刑務所ではセラピーやリハビリテーション、教育も受けられないと告げられ、彼は時間を有意義に過ごすため、執筆とアートに没頭した。彼の最初の著作『Scarred』（Tenth Street Press、2019年）は収監中に手書きで執筆され、完成後、独学で絵を描く技術を習得した。彼の作品はシドニー、ブリスベン、ニューヨーク、サンフランシスコなどで展示され、書籍『This is Ear Hustle』（Crown Publishing、2021年）のイラストレーターも務める。
オーストラリアの刑務所内では創造的な表現の場が不足していることに気づいたダミアンは、2017年に創刊された刑務所雑誌『Paper Chained』に参画し、2021年に編集長に就任した。
『Paper Chained』は現在、オーストラリアの刑務所に収容されている1万4,000人以上に配布されており、世界中の収容者からアートや文章を寄稿している。2024年、ダミアンはオーストラリアで初めての国際刑務所アート展を開催し、8カ国25の刑務所から100点を超える作品が展示された。彼は今後、日本の刑務所アートプロジェクトへの関与を拡大したいと考えている。
Damien Linnane is an Australian author, illustrator, and the editor of Paper Chained, a free art and writing magazine for people in prison.
Beginning in late 2015, Damien spent 10 months in an Australian prison. After being told he was not eligible for therapy, rehabilitation or education in prison, Damien turned to writing and art in order to use his time constructively. His first book, Scarred (Tenth Street Press, 2019), was written by hand in custody, and after its completion he taught himself to draw. Damien’s art has now been exhibited at locations including Sydney, Brisbane, New York and San Francisco, and he is the illustrator of the book This is Ear Hustle (Crown Publishing, 2021).
Recognising the lack of creative outlets for people in custody in Australia, Damien became involved in the prison magazine Paper Chained from its creation in 2017, and became editor in 2021. Paper Chained is now distributed to over 14,000 people in prison in Australia, and receives art and writing from incarcerated people all over the world. In 2024, Damien held the first ever international prison art exhibition in Australia, which featured over 100 artworks from 25 different prisons in 8 countries. He hopes to become more involved in Japanese prison art projects in the future.

Art was one of the main things that helped me get through my own prison sentence. Making art has an incredible power to heal, change lives, and assist people in their reintegration back to society. Thank you for putting together this incredible exhibition. It really makes a difference for both the artists and the community.
