It’s no secret that Japan has held the title for one of the longest-living populations in the world. As Japan faces declining birth rates, it’s expected that the elderly will make up over a third of the entire population by 2050. But this isn’t just an impending crisis for Japan, which is why stakeholders and people across the world will be looking to Japan to set precedents and lead the way in innovation for the aging demographic. Not only does Hiroshima and Japan need a company like Nurse & Craft, but the rest of the developed world needs to see ideas for new ways of life and communities for the elderly come to fruition, grow, and flourish. It’s important we as a society support early-stage companies focusing on this mission.
As human beings, we need relationships and a sense of belonging. We need community. This doesn’t change as we age, which is why we need to do more. Meeting and getting to know my friend Hiroyuki Fukasawa has truly taught me the importance and great potential of community. Community can defy boundaries, language barriers, generational barriers, traditional constraints… but ultimately, it’s an inherent human need. Hiroyuki has an innate ability to understand and connect with people. If anyone can truly build something wonderful, and develop a new community and way of life, it’s Hiroyuki and Nurse & Craft.
