Please support our publication of the first photo essay Letter to My Son by Eiki Mori, comprised of the complete 25 instalments serialized on Shukan Dokushojin, still pictures from Mori’s video art work of the same title and an unreleased poem.

森栄喜について

1976年、石川県出身。パーソンズ美術大学写真学科卒業。写真集「intimacy」（ナナロク社、2013年）で第39回木村伊兵衛写真賞を受賞。近年の展覧会に個展「Family Regained」（KEN NAKAHASHI、2017年）、個展「Letter to My Son」（KEN NAKAHASHI、2018年）、グループ展「小さいながらもたしかなこと 日本の新進作家 vol.15」（東京都写真美術館、2018ー2019年）などがあります。森の作品は、SUNPRIDE FOUNDATIONや東京都写真美術館などのパブリックコレクションを始め、数多くの個人コレクターに所蔵されています。
これまでに出版した写真集に、「CROWS AND PEARLS」（Edition Nord, 2009年）、「tokyo boy alone」（レボリューション・スター・パブリッシング、台湾、2011年）、「intimacy」（ナナロク社、2013年）、「Family Regained」（ナナロク社、2017年）があります。

About Eiki Mori
Born 1976 in Ishikawa prefecture. Graduated from The Photography Dept., Parsons The New School for Design in 2001. In 2014, he released intimacy, for which he received the most prestigious Kimura Ihei Award. Some recent solo exhibitions are Family Regained (2017) and Letter to My Son (2018) at KEN NAKAHASHI, and the group exhibition Things So Faint But Real -Contemporary Japanese Photography vol.15- (2018-2019) at Tokyo Photographic Art Museum. Mori’s works are part of public collections, including SUNPRIDE FOUNDATION and Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, and have been collected by many individual collectors both in Japan and abroad.
Mori has published four photobooks, including CROWS AND PEARL (Edition Nord, Japan, 2009), tokyo boy alone (Revolution Star Publishing and Creation, Taiwan, 2011), intimacy (Nanarokusha, Japan, 2013) and Family Regained (Nanarokusha, Japan, 2017).

写真集「intimacy」で第39回木村伊兵衛賞を受賞

2014年には、写真集「intimacy」で第39回木村伊兵衛賞を受賞しています。森のかつての恋人や友人との「親密な関係性」が、森自身も被写体として登場しながら描かれています。

消えてしまいそうな小さな声を社会に届ける

森は、セクシャルマイノリティーをはじめとする多様性のあり方を主題とした写真作品を多く制作してきましたが、近年では、映像、パフォーマンス作品、文章など多岐にわたる表現方法を展開しているアーティストです。近年のパフォーマンス作品では、自らの体験や記憶を交えた「詩」の朗読や、他者との共演により、自己と他者の境界を探り、身体的な対話を試みてきました。それらは、ともすれば消えてしまいそうな小さな声を、小さな声のまま、公共に開き、そこに生まれる親密性を可視化する試みともいえます。

Delivering the faint, small voices to the public
Mori is best known for his photography on the subject of diversity including sexual minorities, but in recent years has developed a wide variety of methods such as video, performance, writing and poetry. In recent performances he has tried exploring the boundaries between oneself and others, and engaged in physical dialogues, by reading poems mixed with his own experiences or memories and performing with others. These practices could perhaps be explained as an attempt to open small disappearing voices to the public—kept as small as they are—to visualize the intimacy taking place.

沢山の小さな始まりを他者との関係の中に発生させ、社会的なムーブメントへ発展させる

森栄喜はこれまでKEN NAKAHASHIでも、過去2度の個展を開催しました。美術館での展覧会やアートフェスティバルでも積極的に活動を続け、ジェンダーやセクシャルマイノリティーを取り巻く環境について、様々な意見を導き出してきました。
これらの写真集や、展覧会、自らの体験や感情を交えた「詩」の朗読を通じたパフォーマンスなどを通じて、社会的マイノリティーをはじめとする多様性のあり方について自身が体感する「問い」を、社会や公共空間に投げ、社会の中で見過ごされてしまうかもしれないものに自分自身も参与し続けてきました。これらの森の活動は、国内外でも広く反響をもたらし始めています。

Generating many new beginnings within the relationship with others, and developing it into a social movement
Mori has held two solo exhibitions at KEN NAKAHASHI, and has also been actively participating in exhibitions at museums and art festivals, deriving various opinions on the environment surrounding gender topics and sexual minorities. Through these books, exhibitions and poetry reading performances, he has posed questions regarding the diversity of LGBT and others derived from personal experiences into the public, participating himself in what might be overlooked in society. Mori’s practices are starting to have a widespread impact in both Japan and abroad.

KEN NAKAHASHIが刊行する「Letter to My Son」は、森栄喜にとって初のフォトエッセイです。書評専門誌「週刊読書人」で、2018年7月～2019年1月にかけて連載された同タイトルのエッセイは、9.11前のニューヨークと現代の東京を舞台に、ある詩人とアーティストが登場する、森にとって半自伝的な出会いや別れを描写した物語です。短編全25回の日英テキスト、同タイトルの映像作品からのスチール写真、また未発表の詩作品1篇、紙吹雪をイメージした栞などを収録しています。

KEN NAKAHASHI as publisher, we want to release Mori’s first photo essay Letter to My Son
Letter to My Son will be the first photo essay for Eiki Mori as author, and KEN NAKAHASHI as publisher. The essay by Mori of the same title serialized from July 2018 to January 2019 in the book review magazine Shukan Dokushojin, is a story of a poet and an artist who appear in New York before 9.11 and Tokyo today, depicting semi-autobiographical encounters and partings. The book will include 25 short Japanese-English texts, stills from Mori’s video work of the same title, an unpublished poem and a bookmark inspired by confetti.

森の所属ギャラリーKEN NAKAHASHIを出版元として、日英併記にするため翻訳家による英訳と、ブックデザイナーによる装丁を進めてきました。
印刷料530,000円、翻訳料やデザイン料、その他の経費を合わせて全体で約900,000円の制作費を予定しています。
現在の出版状況において300部からの展開となりますが、クラウドファンディングを活用し、目標金額から手数料を差し引いた資金を制作費用に充当することで、結果的に定価を抑えて読者の方々のお手元に届けたいと考えています。

As the gallery representing Mori, KEN NAKAHASHI has been working with him, a translator and a book designer to bind together this project.The total production cost is estimated to be approximately 900,000 JPY, including translation fee, design fee and other expenses. Given the recent climate of publishing, we will start with a small edition of 300 copies. However we anticipate that crowdfunding and allocating the funds with the commission fee deducted to production costs will help lower the purchase price for our readers.

これまでの進捗状況
・ブックデザインはほぼ完成。3月末に最終入稿予定。→分野を横断した双方向的な視点から、タイポグラフィにおける同時代性について研究を行っているグラフィックデザイナー、鈴木大義さんが手がけてくださいました。
・英語翻訳完成。→翻訳を特に重視したため、約1年に渡って、演劇研究者で翻訳家でもあるクリス・グレゴリーさんに、3回以上の校正、毎回の細々とした確認作業などを経て忠実に訳していただきました。

Progress so far
・Almost Complete with the book design by Hiroyoshi Suzuki. The final data submission is scheduled at the end of March.
→About the Graphic designer: Hiroyoshi Suzuki researches contemporaneity in typography through cross disciplinary perspectives.
・English translation is completed.
→About the Translator: With special emphasis on translation, Christopher Gregory, a translator and researcher in the theatre, accurately translated the essays, having proofread and cross checked at least three times for over an year.

2011年に出版された森栄喜の写真集「tokyo boy alone」（右）から選んだ写真を案納泰裕が描いた水彩画と、「Family Regained」（左）から選んだ写真を案納がコラージュした作品をプリントした2種類のオリジナルトートバッグ。森の作品に違った質感を与えることで、人が本来もつ優しさや、激しさなど豊かな感情を森の写真を用いて表現することで、多様性の先にあるものを表現したかったという。全て手縫いで、生地への印刷も某有名ファッションブランドと同じ工場で制作しています。

案納泰裕（あんのう・やすひろ）
1987年、福岡県生まれ。2011年、マウントユニオン大学（米、オハイオ）を卒業。2015年よりファッションを学び始める。

宮形恭平

Kyohei Miyagata
Born Ishikawa prefecture in 1984. Lives in Kanazawa. Miyagata focuses on improvisational performances using laptops and hardware, collaboration with local musicians and providing music for video works. Miyagata provided music for Mori's latest performance works, such as Family Regained: The Splash—We brush our teeth, take a shower, put on pajamas and go out into the street— (2017), A Poet: We See a Rainbow (2018).

想定されるリスクとチャレンジ

小さな始まりから、ゆくゆくは全世界へ向けて多言語での翻訳や普及版の出版企画へとつなげていきたい

300部という小部数で始まるプロジェクトですが、これまで築き上げてきた土台をベースとして、英語以外にも翻訳され、世界の多くの人の手元へと届く多言語での出版企画につなげていきたいです。今回、クラウドファンディングで目標金額に届かなくても、仕様を変更することなく自費で必ず実行いたします。

Expected risks and challenges
–From this small beginning, we want to expand to publish globally in multiple languages to reach a broader audience

Though the project starts with a small number of 300 copies, based on the foundation we have built so far, we want to translate it into languages other than English to connect it to a multilingual publishing project that could reach many people around the world. Even if we do not reach the target amount by crowdfunding, we will execute it at our own expense without changing the specifications.

「Letter to My Son」のプロジェクトページを見てくださり、どうもありがとうございます。

このエッセイは、半自伝的なものではありますが、同時に、かけがえのない出会いや、避けることのできない別れ、時間を越えた友情や愛情についての、普遍的な物語でもあると思っています。
僕が想像できる範囲なんて、ほんの小さなものだと思いますが、それでも、これまでの時代、今日、そしてきっと未来も、僕たちのすぐとなりで（または遠いところで）、本当にたくさんの発せられないまま飲み込まれる声、やっとの思いで発してもかき消されてしまう声があります。それは僕たち自身の届かない声かもしれません。

この物語には、実在の詩人やアーティスト、お店などの名前がたくさん出てきますが、主要な登場人物たちの名前は記されていません。名もなき彼・彼女らの声の中に、あなたが、そして多くの方が、これまで飲み込んだ声、祈りとともに叫ぶ声、愛おしさにやさしく投げかけるであろう声を、見つけてもらえたらと強く思っています。
この本が、この声が、多くの方に届きますように！

Thank you for viewing this project page.

This essay is semi-autobiographical, but at the same time a universal story about irreplaceable encounters, unavoidable breakups, friendship and affection beyond time and space.
Though the scope of what I can imagine may be limited, yet today, in the past and in the future, right next to or far away from us, there must really be a lot of voices swallowed before being uttered, voices spoken with great effort or struggle but wiped out regardless. It may well be our own voices we cannot deliver.

In this story, there are actual poets and artists, existing names of shops and places, but the names of the protagonists are not written. I strongly hope that you, and many others, will find the voices that you’ve swallowed, the cries of prayers and the tones gently cast on your loved ones, among the nameless voices in this book.
I hope that this book and this voice will reach many of you!

NADiff a/p/a/r/tとKEN NAKAHASHIで、刊行を記念して初めてのサウンドインスタレーションの個展「Shibboleth—I peep the ocean through a hole of the torn cardigan」も開催予定です。

初のサウンドインスタレーションを発表いたします。小さな音を遠くへ飛ばすために用いられるホーンスピーカーから、森が綴った詩を多言語で朗読する様々な声色のささやく声が発信されます。ギャラリーの展示空間でそれらの声は、地球のどこかから周り巡って届いた初めて聞く、誰かの懐かしい声のように感じられるでしょう。サウンドと映像を組み合わせ構成いたします。

A Solo exhibition with a sound installation will be held at NADiff a/p/a//r/t and KEN NAKAHASHI

In conjunction with the publication, Mori’s solo exhibition will be held at NADiff a/p/a/r/t/ and KEN NAKAHASHI.In both exhibitions, Mori’s first sound installation will be shown. A horn speaker, used to send small sounds far away, will emit whispers of various voices that read Mori’s poems in multiple languages. In the galley space, these voices shall sound nostalgic but at the same time be felt as if it is heard for the first-time, coming from far around the globe. It will be combined and be composed of sounds and moving images.

KEN NAKAHASHIについて 

今回、クラウドファンディングに初めて挑戦しますギャラリーKEN NAKAHASHIの中橋と申します。私のギャラリーの所属アーティストである森栄喜が書評専門誌「週刊読書人」に連載した短編を、日英併記のフォトエッセイとして自分たちで出版しようと、アーティスト本人をはじめ、翻訳家や、グラフィックデザイナーと一緒になって、1年ほど前から制作に取り組んできました。

中橋健一（なかはし・けんいち）Kenichi Nakahashi1982年、石川県出身。青山学院大学文学部フランス文学科卒業。不動産金融機関在職中に癌に見舞われ、約1年半の闘病を余儀なくされる。回復後、飲食店勤務などを経て、2014年にmatchbaco（現、KEN NAKAHASHI。2016年に改称）を設立。KEN NAKAHASHIではこれまで、人間のあり方を見つめた絵画、写真、映像、立体作品など、国内外の若手からベテラン作家にいたる多彩なジャンルの作品を紹介してきています。ジェンダーとアートの関係性に注目した展覧会を積極的に取り組むなど、社会の中で現代アートと人々がどのように対峙できるかを追求しています。

Hello. I’m Ken from KEN NAKAHASHI Gallery. This is my first challenge for a crowdfunding project.From almost an year ago, we started making Mori’s first photo essay in both Japanese and English, working with a translator and a graphic designer.

Kenichi Nakahashi was born 1982 in Ishikawa prefecture. B.F.A. in the department of French Language and Literature at Aoyama Gakuin University. Had cancer while working at a real estate financial institution and was forced to fight cancer for about an year and half. Having overcome the disease and changes of jobs from restaurants and others, he established matchbaco (now KEN NAKAHASHI; renamed in 2016) in 2014. KEN NAKAHASHI has introduced artists and their works that gaze at humans nature in a variety of genres from domestic to foreign, young emerging to veterans, in the fields of painting, photography, video art and sculpture. KEN NAKAHASHI is actively engaged in sending messages that focus on the relationship between gender and art, and is committed to pursue the ways of confrontation of contemporary art and people in the society.
