原発ぬきの電気でコーヒーをつくりたい

Seeking support to roast coffee without the electricity generated by nuclear plants.

これは､2011年3月11日の震災以降、あたためてきたアイデアです。
震災による原発事故の後､スロー社のある千葉県松戸市は「計画停電エリア」になりました。

「計画停電」とは名ばかりで､当日にならなければ停電するかもわからない
「無計画」なものでした｡

スロー社は､フェアトレードで輸入されたオーガニックのコーヒー豆のみを自社焙煎しています｡焙煎機は電気で動く為､震災以降の停電時は一時的に焙煎ができなくなりました｡

その時、
「オーガニックとかフェアトレードとか、良いことをしているようなつもりになっていたけれど、足元はなんてもろいんだろう！」
と気付きました｡

This project is based on the idea we developed after the big quake hit eastern part of Japan, on March 11th, 2011. Weeks after the earth quake, the Japanese government implemented so called “Planned black out” through out the Kanto Region. Our company is located in Matsudo City, Chiba where this “Planned black out” went ahead. Despite its name of “"Planned black out"”, in reality it was far from “"Planned"”, and was rather “"unplanned" black out”.

We roast fair trade and organic coffee in house with our roaster. However, our roast machine was operated by electric energy provided by the grid. So, during the “Planned black out”, we were unable to roast our coffee.

This is when we realized that how unstable our foundation was, despite the fact we roast fair trade and organic coffee. We thought we were making the difference by roast coffee which is fair trade and organic, but if our electricity was based on the suffering of the people and earth, we were not really doing good to this society.

そんなタイミングで、スタジオジブリが
「スタジオジブリは原発ぬきの電気で映画をつくりたい」
と社屋に掲げたのを見て、私はすっかりシビレてしまいました。

In the same time we were struggling with our dilemma of the energy source, the Studio Gibri, the biggest Animation studio in Japan, decided that they will make movies without energy generated by nuclear. We loved the idea and this inspired us to have a dream to roast our coffee with solar energy.

そこでスロー社も
「スローコーヒーは原発ぬきの電気でコーヒーをつくりたい」
と思ったのが出発点でした｡

太陽光発電との出会い    Encounter with solar energy

震災以降､自然エネルギーでコーヒーをつくれないか？
と考えるようになりました｡
そんな時にgreenz と 藤野電力が企画していた、ミニ太陽光発電システム組み立てワークショップに参加をしました｡

実際にソーラーパネルを組み立て、太陽光による発電を体験した事で
「太陽光エネルギーでコーヒーが作れるじゃないか！」
と考えるようになりました｡

Since the disaster of an earthquake, we have been seeking the way to roast coffee off grid. One day, we joined the workshop,organized by greenz and Fujino Denryoku, focusing on how to build small scale solar energy generating system.

By learning how to build one, we started to think that it is not just a dream, but it is a feasible project to roast coffee with solar generated energy.

支援金の利用方法    Usage of the funds

太陽光発電には､

・電源システム：450,000円
・設置費用他：300,000円
等々の費用が発生します｡

支援金は上記費用として使用させて頂きたいと思っています｡

Installment of the system: 300,000 yen

また､支援金が目標金額を上回った場合は､
・受電システム向上
・ソーラーシステム消耗備品の交換に備えての積立
に充てさせて頂きます｡

If we were able to generate funds more than the cost listed above, we will use the funds to improve our electric receiving system and save for spear parts of solar system.

* Delivery of products for the return
- Drip coffee, iced coffee bag, instant coffee and original roasted coffee (except decafe) will be roasted by solar generated energy.  Therefore, it will be delivered after the installment of the solar system which is planned to be completed in the end of October.

想定されるリスクとチャレンジ  Supposed risks and challenges

リスクとしては､太陽光という自然エネルギーを使用する為､天候不良による発電不足が考えられます｡
しかし､今後直下型地震も高い確率発生すると言われていますので3.11震災後の経験を活かし､太陽光発電（原発ぬきの電気）でのコーヒーの製造を目指していきたいと思っています｡

Because electricity is generated by solar energy, there is possible risk that shortage of the electricity will occur when the weather is not good. But, we aim to produce all our coffee with solar generated electricity without the energy generated by nuclear plants, using our experience after the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake.  Because there is a high probability that earthquakes occurring directly beneath the Tokyo Metropolitan Area in near future, which gives us another reason to switch to solar.

会社の沿革    About the company

・2000年7月設立  

NGOナマケモノ倶楽部から（2015年の言葉でいえば）ソーシャルビジネス第1号として
「オーガニック」「フェアトレード」のコーヒーのみを自社焙煎するコーヒー会社としてうみだされ、21歳、22歳、24歳の若者（バカ者）男子3人で立ち上げる。

Founded in July 2000.

It was born from the Not for Profits Organization called Sloth Club as a first social business company. Slow Inc., was founded by three young man (21 years old, 22 years old and 24 years old) to produce and distribute organic and fair trade coffee.

焙煎、経営、コーヒーすべてが初めてで暗中模索しながら運営するも、うまくいくはずもなく、1年で立上げメンバーが1人抜け、アルバイトをしながら生計を立て、徐々に売上も伸びていったが、2006年末にはもうひとりの立上げメンバーも退社。「オーガニック」「フェアトレード」は2000年設立時と比べ、社会的なニーズになっていたこともあり新しい人材を募り、会社を継続。

It was their first time to roast coffee and manage a company, and they struggled to continue this venture in the beginning. All of the founding members had a second job to support their life at first, and after the first year, one of the founding member has left the company. Though the sales were growing, another founding member has left in the end of 2006. However because the organic and fair trade market and its needs were growing compared to 2000, Mr. Ozawa decided to continue his company with new members.

・2009年10月松戸市八柱にカフェオープン
フェアトレードの発信力を高めるため、飲食店出店の計画をねり、都心の商業施設数社にプレゼンするも
「オーガニック、フェアトレードは良いが、まずは実績を」
と商談は平行線を続ける。
そんな折、ご縁から地元でカフェのオープンから運営する機会を頂き、
千葉県松戸市八柱に「SlowCoffee八柱店」をオープン｡
（現在は経営を交代し、アドバイザーとして関わる）。

Slow Coffee cafe was opened in Yabashira, Matsudo City in October 2009.
In order to strengthen our ability to communicate with our customers about fair trade products, we planned and presented the idea of having cafe to several commercial facilities in Tokyo, but it remained without any progress for while. They all said that organic and fair trade is good, but need to see proven result. However, the local establishment has given us opportunity to open cafe in Yabashira, Matsudo, Chiba prefecture. (Currently management of the cafe is done separately, but the founder of the Slow Coffee is acting as an advisor to the cafe)

・オーガニックブームの到来で売上はスローに右肩上がりに
設立から10年、オーガニック市場の拡大とともに売上を伸ばし毎期約120％の成長を続けてきました。

Since Slow Inc., was founded 10 years ago, it has 120% growth every year as the organic market grow in Japan.

・【ソーラー焙煎】構想開始
2011年3月11日の東日本大地震により、スロー社のある松戸市は計画停電エリアとなり、電力供給のもろさを知る｡そこから“ソーラー焙煎”のアイデアが生まれ、実施にむけて調査を開始。

Solar Roasted Coffee Project
Matsudo City, where Slow Coffee is located, went through so called “the Planned black out” after the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake. This experience made us realize how fragile our electricity source was and the idea of roasting coffee with solar generated energy was born. Since then, we have conducted research and developed plan to make this dream into reality.

・2015年【ソーラー焙煎プロジェクト】始動
総工費約110万円のうち、不足分をクラウドファンディングにて募ることに。

2015, the solar roast roasted coffee project began.
We have raised funds for this projects already but decided to collect rest of the funds by crowd funding. Total cost for this project is 1,100,000 yen.
