ロンドンー京都を往復するイギリス女性と、その家の物語。演劇作品「117- one one seven」イギリス・京都公演

京都を拠点とするBRDGの演劇作品「117-one one seven」と、ロンドンを拠点とする音楽デュオRabbitの「Ghost House Gone House」をロンドン、ストラウド、京都で上演します。

このプロジェクトがはじまるまで・・・

外国人として暮らす

このプロジェクトを立ち上げた山口惠子は、イギリスのロンドン南東部にある Rose Bruford大学で3年間演劇を学びました。そこではじめて、社会の中で 人種的に”マイノリティー” になることを経験し、自分と住む土地とのつながりについて、多くの思いを巡らせました。

帰国後、日本に住んでいるマイノリティーの人種の人たちの言葉を聞きたいという気持ちが育っていく中、京都に25年以上住んでいるイギリス人女性に出会います。彼女がロンドンのニュークロス出身であり、山口がかつて住んでいた場所と近かったことから、山口とそのイギリス人女性はお互いがお互いの立場を交換したような不思議な共感を覚えました。彼女から、かつてニュークロスで住んでいた「117」(ワンワンセブン)と呼ばれていた家のこと、どのように彼女が京都にやってきたのか、日本での生活とイギリスの家族のことを聞いた山口は、その話を元にバイリンガルの演劇作品を作ることにしました。

Keiko Yamaguchi, spent three years in South East London as a foreign student of Rose Bruford College to study theatre. There she encountered a multi-ethnic society, and experienced being a minority for the first time. This experience made her aware of questions around “country” and “individuality" and “home".

When she came back to Japan, she recognised that Japan was considered a homogenous society. Meanwhile, she met a British woman who has been living in Kyoto since 1989, originally from New Cross, London. They felt a mutual empathy with each other’s experience in Kyoto and London. When Keiko heard Bridget’s story of her old house in New Cross and how she moved to Kyoto, she decided to make a theatre piece based on it.  

ニュークロスの記憶

このイギリス人女性がかつて住んでいた117は　古いヴィクトリア調の家で、1850年ごろに建てられたと言われています。第二次世界大戦中は、ロンドン南東部の シナゴーグとしてこの家が使用されていました。その古さと特徴的な外観のためその地域では有名な家でした。2006年に老朽化のため取り壊されるまで、7人の兄弟とその友達や、近所の人々が常に出入りする地域に開かれた家となりました。取り壊される直前はスクワットとなり、近くの芸術大学の学生が住んでいて、表には象の石像が取り付けられたため、その時期は「エレファント・ハウス」という名前で呼ばれていたそうです。117はニュークロスという地域の記憶の一部なのです。 

117 Lewisham Way was an old Victorian house which was built in 1856 and demolished in 2006 after it had become dangerous to live in due to long term disrepair. After the Second World War, it was a shared house for art students from Goldsmith’s College, including the protagonist’s mother, who was also an art student. Among those residents were people who are now well-known artists. After her parents acquired the house, they continued to let out rooms, but as the family grew to ten, they gradually took over the whole house. 117 was always open to people and appeared to have a life of it’s own, even after her father sold the house to developers in 2005. While it was awaiting planning permission, it became a squat. Some Goldsmith’s students lived there, and put the head of an elephant sculpture in the window facing the street. In this incarnation of 117, it became known as The Elephant House. In 2006, it was completely demolished and residential flats were built on the same site, still numbered 117. “117-one one seven” is not only the story of a family, but also part of the local history of New Cross.

それでも、私はまだここにいる

2013年に京都の町家で「 117 -one one seven」を上演しました。劇中では録音されたインタビュー音声を流し、それを日本人の俳優が日本語へと通訳していきました。劇が進む過程で、この彼女を通訳するという行為は、彼女を演ずるという行為に徐々に移行していきます。117の記憶、家族のこと、そしてどうやって彼女が京都に来たのかを話すことで、新しい国に住み始めた時のこと、故郷への思い、マイノリティーとして暮らすこと、その苦悩、そしてそれでもその国に住み続けることなど、外国に住んだことのある人であれば誰もが共感するテーマが語られました。”But I’m still here. ”（それでも私はまだここにいる。）と語る彼女の声は、普段京都の劇場では聞くことのできない「外国人の声」であり、見ている観客（半分は外国人でした）の共感と感動を呼びました。

In the premiere in Kyoto, all the action was done inside the kyomachiya house.The actors were projecting the stories and memories of Bridget’s old house on the furniture and the structure of the kyomachiya. Recorded voice from the interviews was played through speakers, which was interpreted live by the Japanese performers into Japanese during the performance. This act of “interpretation” gradually developed into “acting” as the play went on. We let 117 and the family stories evolve through the act of “interpretation” in the performers’ physicality.The piece touches on themes of home, food, love, birth, death and starting a life in a new country. It moved many foreigners in the audience.

今回上演される、もうひとつの117

今回はBRDGの「117 - one one seven」に加え、ロンドンのDeptfordを拠点とする音楽ユニットRabbitの「 Ghost House Gone House」を二本立てで、ストラウド、ニュークロス、京都の三都市で上演します。この「Ghost House Gone House」も、同じく117を題材に創作された作品です。

「Ghost House Gone House」は、取り壊される直前の117の外観、内観を録画した２つの映像を同時に投影しながら、家でサンプリングした音源を使用するライブパフォーマンスです。BRDGが言葉で語るのに対して、Rabbitは117を視覚、聴覚で捉えています。

BRDGの「117 - one one seven」は、２つの町を行き来する彼女に焦点を当てながら、今回はさらに国から国へと移動する現代の人々の姿を描いていきます。

This project will tour in Stroud, New Cross and Kyoto as a double bill with "Ghost House Gone House" by Deptford based music duo, Rabbit. It is also based on 117.

"Ghost House Gone House" is a multimedia performance with two musicians (Tom Scott and David Aylward). Live music is improvised in interaction with two simultaneously shown videos of the exterior and interior of 117 Lewisham Way, as well as sound recordings taken from the house. The video footage was shot with handheld cameras by Tom Scott and David Aylward around 2005 before the family moved out. Rabbit has the sound and visual interpretation of 117, and BRDG’s piece has a personal story from 117.

地域の記憶を、外国人の物語として再発見する

117の家族の一員である一人の人物が京都に移動したことにより、その記憶は京都で上演されました。前回の京都公演では、 「『外国人』とされる人たちの物語もまた、京都の物語の一部である」ということを京都の観客に提示しました。

今回の会場の一つである Lewisham Arthouseは、117があった場所のすぐ近くにあるアートスペースです。この場所で上演することによって、この「117-one one seven」は、記憶の地・ニュークロスの観客へと手渡されます。117での記憶は旅を続けた末、『外国人』として生活している人物の物語の一部として語り直されます。つまり、今回は「ニュークロスの地域の記憶を、ある外国人の物語として再発見する」ことができると考えています。

偶然にも6月末にEUの離脱が決まり、移民や人種の問題が再浮上している現在のイギリスでこの作品を上演することは、現在「地域」が持つ人種の多様性について再度見つめ直す契機になるのではないかと考えます。

The memory of a house in New Cross has once traveled overseas to Japan and was reborn in Kyoto. In the Kyoto premier, we presented that "A story of a foreigner in Kyoto is also a story of Kyoto. "

One of our venues is Lewisham Arthouse, an art space near where 117 used to be. By presenting this piece where the story is originally from, it is going to be re-told to the audience in UK as a story of “a foreigner”. This time we could "Discover the local memory as the story of foreigner." Although it is about two specific places, New Cross and Kyoto, linked by one person, it reflects the current global movement of people and their stories.

BRDGについて

山口惠子と川那辺香乃が2011年に立ち上げたユニット。
互いがそれぞれ主体となり企画を生み出す場として「BRDG」と名付け、ライブハウス・カフェ・美術館・町屋などで作品を上演している。主な作品として、「ハシ×ワタシ」(2011)、「117- one one seven  」 (2012)、「ヒキダシ_ホテル」(2013)がある。
また、京丹波町質美を拠点とした「423（しつみ）アートプロジェクト」を2013年よりスタートさせ、若手アーティストとともに子どもを対象としたワークショップやイベント、映画製作などを行う。ちなみに「BRDG」を山口は「ビーアールディージー」とよび、川那辺は「ブリッジ」とよんでいる。423アートプロジェクト→ http://423art.org/

BRDG is a theatre group based in Kyoto Japan, founded in 2011 by Keiko Yamaguchi, director/ actor and Kano Kawanabe, producer/ workshop coordinator. It functions as a place where each of them proceed with their own projects. Keiko creates theatre productions which are based on interviews with foreigners living in Kyoto. Kano has been running “423 Art Project” which provides workshops and performances for children. It’s held in an abandoned school located in a small village in the northern part of Kyoto. Both of them try to bridge performing arts to people who don’t have frequent access to theatre.

想定されるリスクとチャレンジ

イギリス現地での会場費、現地スタッフ費、イギリス国内交通費などが赤字である状態です。今回の会場は、どこも劇場として運営している場所ではなく、それらをチケット収入で補填することが厳しいと考え、今回このクラウドファンディングを立ち上げさせていただきました。

目標金額の到達の有無に関わらず、公演は実施いたしますが。構想している技術面、情報宣伝面の十分な施行の為、ご支援のほどよろしくお願い致します。支援していただいた方々の期待に応えられるよう、出来る限りの努力をして、創作と上演を行なってまいります。

We are short of the costs for the staff, domestic transportation and crucially, the venue rental. The ticket prices for the performances are cheaper compared to Japan as not all the venues are theatres. Therefore we decided to make this crowd funding to cover those costs. The project will be carried out even if we don't reach the goal,though some aspects will not be performed as we planned. In any situation, we will do our best to realise our project to repay your support with this tour.

BRDG has been working on the theme "Foreigners Living in Kyoto". It is our biggest challenge to perform "117 - one one seven" and "Ghost House Gone House" in UK and Kyoto right now. プロフィール：大阪府出身・京都在住。俳優・演出家。

高校卒業後、イギリス・ロンドンでパフォーマンス／演劇を三年間学ぶ。
京都を拠点に活動、主な作品にマレビトの会「ヒロシマ−ハプチョン」松本雄吉演出「イキシマ」「石のような水」「十九歳のジェイコブ」「レミング」などがある。
2011年、実存する橋をリサーチし俳優と創作した演劇作品「ハシ×ワタシ」を演出。2013年より、京都に住む外国人にインタビューをして創作する通訳劇「117 -one one seven」、「ヒキダシ＿ホテル」、2016年京丹波町で「とちのこゑ」を発表。

国内外の国際共同制作に数多く関わりながら、移動する現代の人々が共有する人間模様に興味を持っている。

Born in Osaka. After graduating from high school, Yamaguchi went the UK to enter European Theatre Arts course at Rose Bruford College in Sidcup. She returned to Japan in 2009.Since 2010, she has been based in Kyoto as actress and dancer, and been involved in various theatre and dance performances in Kyoto, Osaka and Tokyo. In 2014, she performed in "Nighteen-year-old Jacob" produced by New National Theatre Tokyo, directed by Yukichi Matsumoto, in 2015 “Lemming” by PARCO theatre by Shuji Terayamam directed by Yukichi Matsumoto.

Besides these, she has been involved in various residency programmes in Okinawa, Kyoto and Kobe as an assistant director, performer and interpreter.
